CITIZEN SCIENCE AT THE BARCELONA WOMEN’S PENITENTIARY CENTRE
The Barcelona Women’s Penitentiary Centre, popularly known as Wad-Ras prison and located in the district of Poblenou, was opened in 1983 and currently has 160 inmates. This activity will be exclusively for a group of inmates and will take place in the prison.
We shall discover a series of citizen science projects that can be done online from anywhere with an Internet connection, to either classify galaxies, identify animals in the African Savannah, resolve the structure of a protein with Foldit, or map a brain in 3D. And after that we shall talk about expertise and non-expertise, about interest and passion, and above all, about how we can build knowledge and transform this learning process into a worthwhile activity, both personally and in international scientific research work.
