Living longer and better
When health, biomedicine and technology meet
Several proposals at the Biennale addressed the new knowledge and technologies that will shape the future of people's health and well-being. Here is a selection of the videos.
Health is one of people's main concerns. The best tool to promote and improve our quality of life is the knowledge generated by the scientific method. Thanks to this, life expectancy in prosperous countries has not stopped growing since the middle of the 20th century. Now, in the 21st century, new knowledge and technologies open up new possibilities for combating diseases previously considered incurable, improving aspects of our health and well-being, but also pose new challenges for dignified ageing.
The new century was marked by an event that was a turning point in the study and treatment of diseases, among other aspects. This was the first sequencing of the human genome in 2001, i.e. the identification of the set of genes that explain the biology of our species. This fact, together with the technological evolution it has entailed, has opened the door to a new type of personalized medicine, adapted to the genetic particularities of each person, more targeted at the cells and tissues affected by the disease and even capable of directly altering genes to put an end to a hereditary problem.
