Braulio Gómez Fortes

Political scientist and sociologist

Deputy Director and member of the Board of Directors of the Deusto Cities Lab, whose main objective is to generate and apply the knowledge developed at the University of Deusto to improve the quality of life in cities. Within this space oriented to social transformation, he has directed several laboratories focused on improving the inclusiveness of cities.

PhD in Political Science and Sociology by the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), he has developed his research career at the Institute of Social Sciences of Lisbon, at the Institute of Advanced Social Studies (IESA-CSIC) and at the University of Edinburgh. He directs the Deusto Social Barometer, a biannual reference survey in the Basque Country on living conditions and the political and social situation in the Basque community. In addition, he has been principal investigator of the Regional Manifestos Project since 2010, a project funded by the MINECO within the R+D+I plans, which helps to understand the political race through the topics chosen by the parties to approach citizenship.

He has directed different applied projects related to public opinion, political participation and the quality of democracy. He directed the first study conducted in Europe focused on measuring the quality of democracy from the citizens' point of view (CIS2790). The results of this research were published by Ariel under the title La calidad de la democracia en España. Una auditoría ciudadana (2012; with I.Palacios and M.Pérez). Within the line of democracy and participation, he published with Joan Font ¿Cómo votamos en los referéndums? (Catarata, 2014).

In recent years he has opened a line of research to make political exclusion visible within studies on inequality. The latest works on this topic have been published in the Alternativas Foundation, in the Social Observatory of "La Caixa", in the Foessa Report 2014 and 2019 and in the OXFAM Report on Inequality in the Basque Country 2021.
