Biomaterials and quality of life

By Javier Fernández, University of Barcelona (UB), and Antoni Isalgué, Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).

As we age, some of our body tissues and organs do not function as they always have. One way to guarantee a dignified quality of life during ageing is to replace those tissues and organs that cannot perform their function, which implies the development of new biomaterials capable of integrating into our body in the best possible way. Find out more about the research being done in this area.

Human mini-organs to understand COVID-19

By Nuria Montserrat, Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC).

Find out how tiny human organs can be generated in the lab and how antiviral drugs are tested for their effectiveness. Discover the aims and results of this research, which is being carried out in collaboration with researchers and biotech companies through the MAD-CoV-2 project funded by the European IMI ProgrammeH2020 fund.

When defences lose their way

By Ana Esteve-Solé, Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute (IRSJD).

Learn about the basis of the immune system, our defence system against infectious agents, and why some microbes are harmless to most people, but at the same time represent a threat to the health of some. In the session you will find out what primary immunodeficiencies are and you will find answers to all these questions.

Presented by Miriam Rivera, with the collaboration of the Associació Catalana de Comunicació Científica (ACCC).
