Humans have transformed the world in profound ways. With the invention of fire, the manipulation and creation of tools, the development of agriculture and the domestication of animals, our limitations as living beings have been overcome by the possibility of altering nature.

With the enlightenment revolution and, much later, with the information revolution and molecular genetics, the possibilities of engineering living systems have become increasingly tangible. At the beginning of the 21st century, new ways of modifying cells and cellular circuits emerged, giving rise to a new revolution: that of synthetic biology. A new stage is beginning where we can tackle hitherto untreatable diseases or create biorobots designed à la carte. What are the limits?
