Workshops and experiments for educational centers
The Biennial has also dedicated a space in its programming to disseminating quantum science to educational centers. Young people have been able to participate in experiments and workshops that have taken place especially during the morning hours in El Born. Museu d'Història de Barcelona, and have been extended to other spaces in the city (civic centers and libraries) within the framework of + Biennial. The activities have had a very notable influx of attendees. Staff from the city's different research centers and cultural facilities have joined forces to awaken scientific vocations and make the most cutting-edge knowledge accessible.
Meet the experts - Activities for schools
Among the different proposals, “Meet the Experts – School activities” stood out with sessions held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, between 10:00 and 12:00, in El Born. Different researchers from the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB), the Institute of High Energy Physics (IFAE) and the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) shared with primary school students their day-to-day life in the laboratories and some of the lines of research they are developing. The sessions allowed participants to discover the work of physicists, and why this research is essential to understanding the universe, and to explore concepts such as quantum entanglement.
Cosmic Rays in the City
Also in the Born, in morning and afternoon sessions on Friday, the IFAE offered “Cosmic Rays in the City”. The activity included live experiments aimed at discovering the nature of cosmic rays, the high-energy particles that reach Earth from the ends of the universe. The experience was attended by students from the Institut Jaume Balmes in Barcelona and the Institut de la Roca del Vallès, who were able to observe up close how these invisible phenomena are detected.
Quantum Cryptography for Secure Communications
On the other hand, the Institute of Photonic Sciences organized the workshop “Quantum Cryptography for Secure Communications”, aimed at a young audience and also held in El Born on Thursday afternoon. The activity showed how the principles of quantum mechanics can help guarantee the security of digital communications, both current and even more so in the future.
+ Biennal
Furthermore, within the + Biennial program, activities have been carried out aimed especially at the little ones and also at a family audience. From Monday to Saturday, a total of eleven libraries organize "EstàsON. A journey through quantum secrets", which includes different games and activities for children aged 9 to 12 to discover and experiment with concepts of quantum mechanics in a fun way. There are still three sessions that will take place tomorrow Saturday (in the Joan Miró Library, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., in the Francesca Bonnemaison Library, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and in the Camp de l'Arpa-Caterina Albert Library, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.).
On the other hand, the show "Rubèn and the magic of quantum", at the Can Déu Civic Center, combined experiments and narrative last Tuesday, with the aim of awakening scientific curiosity in the little ones.
With the various proposals, the Biennial reaffirms its desire to bring science and research closer to all citizens and demonstrate that technology, quantum, and physics in general, can be both fascinating and accessible.
